What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is not a therapy, but it can be therapeutic.
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally.” Jon Kabat-Zinn.
Most of the time we are not fully aware of the present moment and nor are we really engaging with what is happening right now in this moment. Mindfulness is about tuning into our five senses, so that we can be much more present in each moment.
We are often thinking about what is happening later today or ruminating in the past. We do this all the time and there is nothing wrong with this. Mindfulness is about noticing the mind’s tendency to go into the past and future.
Some people think of mindfulness as emptying your mind or forcing your mind not to wander. Instead, it is about noticing where the mind has gone and gently guiding it back to the present moment. This is a skill you can develop through practice.
